of D'Angelo's passing
-
Today, the first day of school in Southington, marks the 36th anniversary of the death of Lawrence W. D'Angelo, who was heading into his 14th year as principal of Southington High School at the time of his passing.
-
Mr. D'Angelo died at home on Aug. 30, 1971, less than one week before the school year was to begin. He was 63.

The veteran educator began his career as a business teacher at Lewis High School in 1934. In the 1940s he took leave for a tour of duty with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was appointed an assistant principal at Southington High in 1952 and was tapped to replaced principal Martin Phelan when he retired in 1958.

Mr. D'Angelo was succeeded by assistant principal John J. Gasecki. The media center at the Pleasant Street high school (constructed after Mr. D'Angelo's death) is named in his honor.
