We open the Photo Album this week and remember the coach of all coaches, Joseph J. Fontana. This shot from 1949 shows "The Grey Fox" in his Lewis High School baseball coaching uniform.

Fontana, a Southington native, graduated from Lewis in 1927 and after graduating from Trinity College began a teaching and coaching career that would end after 47 years with a reluctant retirement at age 70 in 1979.

Coach Fontana was a biology teacher until becoming the school's athletic director in the 1960s. The namesake of SHS's Fontana Field, he died at age 87 in December 1995.
