OBITUARY
Edward Delahunty, namesake of SHS gym

Edward Delahunty, a 1936 graduate of Lewis High School whose years of public service were recognized with the naming of a Southington High School gymnasium in his honor, has died at the age of 89.

A Southington native and veteran of World War II, Mr. Delahunty died Monday surrounded by his family.

He worked as a carpenter and was later the vice president and president of the family construction company. His public service began in 1966 when he was elected to the first Town Council. Through the years he served on a number of committees and boards, including the Board of Assessors, the Building Board of Appeals, the Southington High School Building Committee, the Police Station Building Committee and the Permanent Building Committee.

His work on decades of school building projects was recognized by the Board of Education in 1999 when the gymnasium in the east wing of Southington High was named in his honor.

Mr. Delahunty is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helene; a son, Edward "Ned" J. Delahunty Jr.; a daughter, Diane L. Mayer; three grandchildren, Jerram E. Delahunty, Colin J. Delahunty and Kristine San Filippo; and a great-grandson, Liam E. Delahunty; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Anna Mae Gilhuly, Margaret Wooding; and brothers, Patrick Sr., Joseph, James and William Sr.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. at Mary Our Queen Church. Burial will be with military honors at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home.
