In our Quick Quiz on Nov. 19, we asked whether it were true or not that the football teams of Lewis and Southington High School have played a Thanksgiving Day game each and every year since 1930. Well, we overlooked the fact that we never offered an official answer. So here goes:
-
The answer is false. The boys of Lewis and Southington High School have been able to sleep in on only one Thanksgiving in the 70-plus year tradition. In 1952, Southington football's season ended on Nov. 1 in an upset over Stonington, 20-19. The expected Turkey Day game against Plainville was already out of the picture by then since the town's school board had canceled the football season at the request of coach Edward "Ted" Knurek. According to a Southington News article at the time, only 17 boys had reported for practice in Plainville and Coach Knurek said they were "too small" for interscholastic play. Additionally, several potential players had failed to keep eligibility in their studies.

Southington, under coach Joe Fontana, ended the '52 season 4-3.
