SHS MOURNS PASSING
OF TWO FORMER TEACHERS

With only days left in the school year, the Southington High School faculty and staff are reeling from the June 3 death of retired teacher and coach Bob Garry, just three weeks after learning of the passing of former SHS English teacher Josephine Shinder.

Mr. Garry (photo at right) died in his sleep at the age of 66 on June 3 and Mrs. Shinder, who was 59, succumbed to cancer on May 14.

Mr. Garry began his career in the Southington school system as a Math teacher at John F. Kennedy Middle School in 1966. He moved to the SHS Math department in 1983 and became the boys’ tennis coach and had served as a class advisor. At the high school he met his future wife, Nancy Turner, a fellow Math teacher. Mr. Garry retired in 2001. He later coached the girls’ tennis team and, having announced his retirement as coach earlier this year, was scheduled last week to be honored for his service.

Mrs. Shinder began her 30-year career with the Southington school system as a middle school teacher in the gifted and talented program. She later taught English at the high school, and was the administrator of the school-business partnership. When Kathleen McGrath became assistant principal in 1994, Mrs. Shinder succeeded her as assistant chairperson of the SHS English Department. She additionally was a member of the adjunct faculty at Central Connecticut State University and was an instructor with the Alternate Route to Teacher Certification. She left SHS in 2004 to become an administrator (instructional leader) in the East Haven school system.
