The elder Fontana, a legend in his own right, coached numerous sports including baseball beginning in 1932 (when his career as a teacher and coach started at Lewis High School). He gave up baseball in 1962. That's where John Fontana's legacy begins, winding its way through the decades to his retirement in 2002. So with 40 years as coach (and a baseball field bearing his name at SHS), he bested his uncle as baseball coach by 10 years.
