A CHANGING OF THE GUARD
FOR SCHOOL BOARD TONIGHT
One retired New Britain teacher will be replacing another on the Southington Board of Education tonight.
-
Robert Galati (seen at left) is expected to be appointed to fill the remaining nine weeks in the term of veteran board member Zaya A. Oshana, who stepped down last month citing health reasons.
-
Galati recently retired from a 36-year career in education. A math teacher and guidance counselor in the New Britain school system, he is seeking a term in his own right on the school board in the fall election. He is among three political newcomers on the Democratic ticket – including Mark Albanese and Sharon Neupaver - joining incumbents David Derynoski, Kathleen Rickard and Patricia Johnson. Galati is the husband of Southington High School Special Education teacher Janet Galati.
-
Oshana, himself a retired educator in the New Britain school system, is leaving the board of education after 34 years, the third-longest tenure in town history (behind legendary board members Walter A. Derynoski and Urbin T. Kelley.) He was a Republican until 1987 when the party failed to support him in his bid for reelection, propelling him to join the Southington Democrats. During his tenure he has garnered among the highest number of votes in almost every election.
