Richard M. Cianci Jr., a 1994 graduate of Southington High School who was a former police officer and political candidate, died unexpectedly on Monday at the age of 33.

Born in New Britain, he was a Southington resident for most of his life. He was the son of the late Richard M. Cianci Sr., former state commissioner of housing, and Gail Cianci-Hageman, a former member of the Southington Zoning Board of Appeals. Mr. Cianci followed in his parents' political footsteps when he ran in 2006 as the Republican candidate for the 81st District seat in the Connecticut General Assembly.

A former police officer in the towns of Beacon Falls and West Hartford, he was employed at the time of his death as a medical sales representative for KCI-Therapeutic Support Systems.
