Catherine "Kay" D'Angelo dies;
wife of late SHS principal
-
Catherine (Cook) D'Angelo, widow of former Southington High School principal Lawrence W. D'Angelo, died last week (Nov. 1) at the age of 87.
-
Mrs. D'Angelo was a 1938 graduate of Lewis High School. She met her future husband at school and the two were married in 1940. They were married until Mr. D'Angelo's sudden death in August 1971. Her obituary credits her with taking over the insurance agency run by her husband when he was drafted in World War II. Though she initially had no experience in doing so, she would run the D'Angelo Insurance Agency for the next 51 years. At the same time she became involved with and supported a number of other family businesses. As a result, again without prior experience or training, in the 1980s she successfully served as administrator of the Ridgewood Convalescent Home. She also helped in all aspects of the family's golf course enterprise, the Southington Country Club, from bookkeeping to tending bar.

Mrs. D'Angelo is survived by a son, Lawrence James D'Angelo, M.D. of Bethesda, Maryland; and two grandchildren, Marisa Kay D'Angelo of Washington, D.C. and Michael Amidon D'Angelo of Charlotte, NC. She also leaves two bothers, Walter Cook of Southington and William Cook of Orlando, Florida; and a sister, Mary DeSando of Southington. She was predeceased by two sisters, Ann Galiette and Magdalene Galiette. Mrs. D'Angelo is interred at St Thomas Cemetery. Donations are being accepted to the Catherine D'Angelo Nursing Support Fund, Southington Care Center, and/or the D'Angelo Family Fund, Children's National Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
