Did You Know...
-
The first Southington High School commencement ceremony to take place outdoors was in 1968?
-
Previous classes had gone to Principal Lawrence D'Angelo seeking an outdoor ceremony but it was deemed cost prohibitive to have to install temporary bleachers. Once permanent bleachers had been constructed adjacent to the SHS football field - with a seating capacity of 2,500 no less - D'Angelo went to the Board of Education seeking the thumbs up for an outdoor graduation ceremony. In March 1968, they gave the okay, making the Class of '68 the first that didn't have to stress about the limited seating capacity of the auditorium...or which relatives would be relegated to the gymnasium to watch the ceremony on closed circuit TV.
