Well, Since You've Asked...
Q: When I was a student at SHS in the mid-1970s, Mr. Gasecki had just become the principal. After college and work I moved back to town in the late 1980s and he was still at the high school. It got me to thinking - who is the longest-serving principal at SHS? - Philip M.

A: From the time the school system was organized, superintendents and principals didn't stick around for very long. It wasn't until the 20th century that they didn't always seek out greener pastures. John Gasecki was principal from 1971 until his retirement in 1987, for a total of 16 years. His successor, Jerome Auclair, was here until 2002. That's 15 years. Lawrence D'Angelo served as principal from 1958 until his untimely death in 1971 (13 years). The principal with the longest tenure to date is - by far - Martin Phelan (seen above) at 31 years. He led Lewis High, and later SHS, from 1927 until his retirement in 1958.
