Auclair, former principal of SHS, retires
-
Five years after leaving SHS to become the chief administrator at Darien High School, Jerome A. Auclair has retired from a 40-year career in education.
-
When Darien High students return to class on Thursday, their new principal will be former assistant principal Dan Haron.
-
Auclair announced in March 2002 he would be leaving Southington High School that June after nearly 15 years, though he did not say publicly whether he would be retiring or taking another job. Some colleagues believed Auclair’s reported icy relationship with then-superintendent of schools Harvey Polansky may have been a factor in his decision to resign.
-
Auclair came to SHS in the fall of 1987 as a former teacher and school administrator. His first months overlapped the medical leave of outgoing principal John Gasecki.
-
While at Darien High, Auclair was named the 2004 Connecticut High School Principal of the Year by the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS).
-
At the Darien commencement ceremony on June 20, Auclair bid farewell to a school that by all accounts appreciated his style. And he bid farewell to a career in education that began in the late 1960s. “It would be my fondest wish for each member of the Class of 2007,” he told graduates, “that you will have the great fortune of working for 40 years of your life in a job that brings you challenge, satisfaction and joy and that your career ends in a positive way.”
-
Auclair was succeeded at Southington High by assistant principal and former English teacher Kathleen McGrath.

I know some people in Darien education and this post is correct. By all accounts they did like his style. But Jerry also loosened up a lot once he left SHS. So the style they liked was not what we knew here.

In his final graduation speech he actually made a joke about a group of students who got kicked out of the prom. Imagine him ever doing that here. Maybe he would have been more appreciated if he were more personable here.

Regardless, I wish him well in retirement.
